I'm thinking that it may only be a matter of either supplying power to a particular section or making a certain connection to power up just the amp itself. Since the main amp has only a pair of Sanyo STK 443 chips on it, I would think that the amp board should be able to be powered up and used as a stand alone power amp? The inputs and outputs are attached, the transformer appears to be wired into the protection relay section. With those removed, I have what looks like a basic chip amp board with a power supply and transformer off to one side. and the front panel is only connected to the HDMI board. I can clearly ID the HDMI board, the Video board, and the TV board. The whole thing is a series of small boards interconnected with ribbon cables. The amp is presumably ok but unable to turn on without the functioning HDMI board. Apparently the HDMI board and DTS chip controls this whole receiver. I don't care to buy another, but can't see just trashing this thing since the issue is in the HDMI board not the amp. It died with only 20 hours of use after 8 years, Onkyo says the program and warranty are up on these and issued a 40% coupon on a new unit. I have a dead, no sound, Onkyo TX-NR509 surround sound receiver.
